for the Lytham Green Drive Golf Club Website LYTHAM GREEN DRIVE GOLF CLUB In 1913, there were five golf clubs in the area, but, they were all in St.Annes. The nearest golf club to Lytham was Fairhaven and its future was uncertain. It was expected that with the rapid rate of building development at Fairhaven, the golf club would soon cease to exist. In 1913, a group of Lytham residents formed the Lytham Green Drive Golf Club Ltd. The original 18-hole course was designed by Sandy Herd and laid out by Dr.Mackenzie at a total cost of £1,600. The Squire of Lytham, John Talbot Clifton declared the course open when he drove off the first tee in July, 1913.
Unfortunately, the young club became a victim of the 1914-18 war. In 1919, the local newspaper reported the club's liquidation: "The Green Drive Club was killed by the war. It had every prospect of success, for Dr.Mackenzie had made the greens unique...and the membership was increasing rapidly when the war came. The young members gradually disappeared, exchanging putters for pushers and golf balls for bullets. Money was wanted by the makers of the links, and as there was none to give, the collapse came." The club was revived in 1919 and many changes have since been made to the course. By 1947, visitors' fees were bringing in over £1,000 p.a. and the club was financially secure. |
